Sometime in November, I finally understood.

It was a day like any other. In a daze, I walked to the kitchen, then stared blankly at the coffee maker and turned around again.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the hallway mirror.

“I don’t even recognize you anymore,” she had said.

This was in October. I told her not to worry.

She nodded, but as always, her smile betrayed her.

“I’ll bring you back,” she said, “and remember, it’s you and me until the end.” Her eyes sparkled as she pulled me closer.

“I’ll see you tomorrow!”

But there was no tomorrow, and I wish I had never let her go.
